Minister Mchunu to assess sewer spillage at Darvill Waterwater Treatment Works in Pietermaritzburg

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr Senzo Mchunu will lead a site inspection at Darvill Wastewater Treatment Plan situated in Msunduzi Local Municipality in Pietermaritzburg on Friday, 22 October 2021.

The site inspection follows a three-day working session Minister Mchunu undertook with his deputies last week where several issues hindering the provision of clean water and sanitation services were raised.

The sewer spillage at Darvill Wastewater Treatment Plant is one of the major issues that Minister Mchunu said needed urgent intervention to improve water quality and restore people’s dignity. The spillage at this plant has on previous occasions resulted in large volumes of untreated and highly concentrated sewage to contaminate the Msunduzi River, affecting people living downstream.

Minister Mchunu is expected to meet with all role players with an aim of devising corrective measures to be undertaken to fix the plant.
