Over 50,000 Candidates in Nyeri to Take Final KCPE Under 8-4-4 System and Inaugural KPSEA

Nyeri—The County Director of Education in Nyeri has announced that a total of 52,453 candidates from eight sub-counties are set to sit for this year’s national exams. These exams include the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE).

According to a new release by Kenya News Agency, Jane Njogu, 15,857 candidates will sit for KPSEA and 16,740 for the KCPE exams. The latter group will be the last to take the KCPE under the existing 8-4-4 education system, which is being phased out in favor of the 2-6-3-3-3 model. Furthermore, 19,856 form four candidates are slated to begin their KCSE theory papers on November 6th.

Njogu stated that preparations for the exams have been completed. The Ministry of Education is collaborating with the National Government Administrative Officers, National Police Service personnel, and the Teachers Service Commission to ensure smooth administration of the exams. Rehearsals for both KPSEA and KCPE will take place on Friday, ahead of the exams starting on Monday.

The County Director of Education also elaborated on the logistics. “Officers were sent from Nairobi to brief people on the ground, which included principals, supervisors, and invigilators. We have also held security meetings with the County Commissioner, and have agreed on how we will be handling the exams,” she said.

All 771 KCPE and KCSE examination centers will have contractual supervisors and invigilators. However, those taking the KPSEA will be supervised by their respective subject teachers. Additionally, 868 candidates will sit for KCPE and KCSE papers as private candidates in 254 examination centers. Each of the eight sub-counties has been provided with a container as a distribution point for exam materials, overseen by the respective Sub-County Director of Education and Deputy County Commissioners.

When asked about potential issues such as pregnant candidates, Njogu said no such cases have been reported. She assured that the Ministry is working in tandem with the County Government Health Department to handle such eventualities, should they arise.

The government has deployed 1,700 officers, including security personnel, to oversee the month-long exam process.
