Government Delays School Openings Due to Nationwide Flood Crisis

MOMBASA – The Kenyan government, through its spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, has announced a delay in the reopening of schools across the nation due to ongoing severe flooding that has led to widespread destruction and loss of life. The decision was made public today during a press briefing at the Regional Commissioner’s office in Mombasa.

According to Kenya News Agency, the persistent heavy rainfall has not only damaged property and infrastructure but also displaced thousands of families, making it unsafe for school activities. “The data from various government agencies indicates that learners from some schools are unable to conduct any activities due to the severe nature of the floods,” he explained. Initially, the government had planned to address only the individual schools affected, but the scope of the crisis has necessitated a broader response.

To ensure the safety of students and staff, the Ministry of Education has postponed the opening of primary and secondary schools by one week to May 6th, 2024. This measure aims to safeguard lives and allow time for implementing adequate safety measures in the affected areas.

The government’s response has been coordinated by the Multi-Agency Response Committee on Floods following a directive from the President on April 23, 2024, to intensify efforts in tackling the flood situation. The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to warn of heavy rains likely to impact regions including the Lake Victoria Basin, various highlands and lowlands around the Rift Valley, Nairobi, and parts of North Eastern and Western Kenya.

Mwaura highlighted the importance of community vigilance against flash floods and poor visibility, advising residents in the affected areas to heed government advisories seriously. He noted that the toll from the floods has been severe, with 103 reported deaths so far, the Rift Valley region experiencing the highest loss with 21 lives claimed. Additionally, there have been 29 injuries and 21 missing persons reported, with a total of 28,484 households displaced, affecting approximately 185,297 people.

Residents needing assistance can contact the National Disaster Operation Centre at the toll-free number 0800721571, and the Nairobi County Emergency Operation Centre has also established a toll-free line 1508 for emergencies.
