CAF awards the organization of CAN 2025 to Morocco

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Wednesday awarded Cairo the organization of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) football in Morocco, 35 years later.

It was following a meeting of the CAF executive committee that Morocco was designated host country of the 35th CAN.

Withdrawn from Guinea in 2022, several other countries were candidates to organize the competition. There was Algeria, the Nigeria – Benin duo, Zambia and Morocco.

Before the CAF executive committee meeting was held, Algeria withdrew its candidacy. Zambia and the Nigeria-Benin duo have, for their part, postponed their candidacy for CAN 2027, giving free rein to the Shereef Kingdom.

Morocco has sports, hotel and road infrastructure to host the competition. The country hosted the Mondialito, the women’s CAN and the U23 CAN without any problem this year.

This is the second time after 1988 that Morocco will organize the CAN.

CAF also entrusted the organization of CAN 2027 to the East African trio composed of Kenya, Uganda and Tanza
nia.
