Murang’a Bishop Commends Government’s Crackdown on Illicit Alcohol

MURANG’A – The Catholic Diocese of Murang’a Bishop, James Maria Wainaina, has praised government initiatives to combat the proliferation of illicit alcohol and urged a unified approach to address this issue, particularly its impact on the youth.

According to Kenya News Agency, who spoke during his Easter Pastoral message at Gaitega Catholic Church, there is a significant need for dialogue and cooperation among families, communities, and authorities to develop sustainable solutions to the challenges posed by alcohol and substance abuse. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to support the Deputy President’s campaign against the illegal alcohol trade and substance misuse.

The bishop highlighted the severe consequences of illicit brews and drug abuse, which range from economic hardship for families to the loss of lives, including productive young individuals. He advocated for a comprehensive analysis of the alcohol problem in Kenya, suggesting that government intervention should extend to the regulation of raw material sources and the enforcement of stricter controls over alcohol distribution channels.

In light of recent tragedies, such as the loss of nearly 20 individuals in Kirinyaga due to illicit alcohol consumption, Bishop Wainaina called for decisive action against suppliers and vendors involved in this illegal market. He also stressed the necessity of providing alternative livelihoods for those engaged in the sale of illicit brews and addressing the broader socio-economic factors contributing to substance abuse.

Additionally, Bishop Wainaina expressed concerns over the activities of LGBTQ advocacy groups, warning of potential risks to family values and societal norms. He urged lawmakers to defend the family unit and uphold traditional marriage definitions, reflecting the stance of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Furthermore, the bishop appealed to the Ministry of Health and county governments to engage in meaningful dialogue to resolve the ongoing doctors’ strike and prevent further escalation of the healthcare crisis. He called for compassion and solidarity, particularly during the Easter season, to ensure that healthcare remains accessible to all citizens.
