Togo Suspends RFI and France 24 Accreditations Over Alleged Ethical Violations

LOME — The Togolese media regulator has suspended the accreditation of foreign correspondents from RFI and France 24, accusing the news outlets of “serious failings” in their political coverage.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the High Audiovisual and Communication Authority of Togo (HACC) claims that the coverage by these broadcasters violated journalistic ethics. The decision comes just before the legislative and regional elections, originally set for April 15 but postponed to April 29, 2024.

The HACC’s press release, made public on April 15 and mentioned by sources including alome.com, did not provide specific details regarding the alleged failings. This action follows a similar accusation in March 2023 by Patrice Talon, the President of Benin, who charged RFI with promoting harmful narratives.
