Bafana Bafana Triumphs Over Benin in FIFA World Cup Qualifier at Moses Mabhida Stadium

Durban – Bafana Bafana secured a 2-1 victory against Benin at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon, marking a successful start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. This opening match of Group C witnessed a strong performance from the South African senior men’s national team.

According to South African Football Association, Coach Hugo Broos and his team were determined to win their first Group C match. Percy Tau initiated the scoring in the third minute, setting a positive tone for the team. Bafana Bafana maintained control in the first half, with Khuliso Mudau extending the lead just before halftime.

However, the second half saw a resurgence from Benin as Steve Mounie scored in the 69th minute, bringing the visitors back into contention. Coach Broos acknowledged the challenge posed by Benin in the second half and expressed gratitude to the Durban supporters for their enthusiastic presence.

Despite Benin’s comeback effort, Bafana Bafana held firm until the final whistle. Coach Broos praised his team’s persistence and the support from the crowd, emphasizing the importance of such backing for the team.

Following the match, Bafana Bafana returned to Johannesburg and are scheduled to travel to Rwanda on Sunday, 19th November 2023. Their next match in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers will be against Rwanda on Tuesday, 21st November 2023, before returning to South Africa on 22nd November.
