Swift response leads to three arrests and confiscation of unlicensed firearms in George

The swift response by various police units to a business robbery perpetrated in George led to the arrest of three suspects and the confiscation of two unlicensed firearms.

On Saturday, 12 August 2023 at about 13:00 various police units and a local security company in a combined effort cornered a vehicle believed to be involved in an armed robbery at a business in York Street, George earlier. Information took the team to Zone 5, Thembalethu where a yellow Fiat, believed to be the getaway vehicle, was tracked down. The vigilant members proceeded with a search of the vehicle and the occupants. The members found two firearms (Astra revolver and 9mm pistol) with six rounds of ammunition, a drone, six cellphones and bank cards in their possession. They confiscated the items and arrested the three suspects, two men and one woman, aged between 27 and 30.

The trio remain in custody and are expected to make their first court appearance on Tuesday, 15 August 2023 on charges of armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of stolen property.

Western Cape police management lauded the team for their swift response which led to the arrest of the suspects and confiscation of unlicensed firearms. Firearms in the hands of criminals threaten the safety of the public and police are steadfast to remove these items from the streets.

Investigation into this matter continues.
