IGAD Forecasts Wetter Than Normal Conditions for Horn of Africa

Addis Ababa: The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) anticipates wetter than normal weather conditions for the Greater Horn of Africa from March to May 2024. The forecast, which covers Kenya, Somalia, southern Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and north-western Tanzania, suggests a positive impact on agriculture, water resources, and livelihoods.

According to Ethiopian News Agency,ICPAC’s press release, sent to ENA, highlighted the potential for early rainfall in several regions, improving the prospects for the agricultural sector. However, the center also warned of increased flood risks, particularly in areas that experienced above-average rainfall in the previous season. Dr. Guleid Artan, director of ICPAC, emphasized the need for preparedness and coordinated action to mitigate potential flooding impacts and leverage the forecasted rainfall for sustainable development.

Despite the optimistic rainfall outlook, Artan cautioned about the lingering effects of past droughts, conflicts, and floods on the region’s food security and resilience. He called for a unified approach to using climate information for the benefit of the region’s development.
