Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Strengthens Ethiopia’s Energy and Aviation Sectors Through Visits to Kenya and Tanzania


Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent visits to Kenya and Tanzania have been crucial in advancing Ethiopia’s interests in the energy and aviation sectors.



According to the Ethiopian News Agency, the Spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the premier’s engagements were instrumental in bolstering Ethiopia’s relations with both nations, particularly in areas of energy, where Ethiopia sees immense potential. During his visit to Kenya, Prime Minister Abiy emphasized the importance of regional cooperation based on mutual respect and shared interests, which has been beneficial, with Ethiopia earning about $100 million annually from energy provision to Kenya.



The discussions between Ethiopia and Kenya were pivotal in further strengthening their cooperation, with a focus on mutual benefits and fostering people-to-people relationships. Similarly, in Tanzania, the visit led to the signing of cooperation agreements in agriculture, energy, and aviation. Ethiopia has agreed to supply 400 KV of energy to Tanzania, with aspirations to increase this to up to 2000 MWs, aiming to extend its energy supply to more countries in southern Africa. Ethiopia’s commitment to training Tanzanian pilots and ground technicians was highlighted as a key aspect of the bilateral cooperation, with Tanzania expressing a strong desire to further strengthen ties in the aviation sector.



Moreover, Ambassador Meles underscored the significance of Ethiopia’s diplomatic achievements over the past week, including the 128th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa, participation in the WTO’s 13th Ministerial Conference in the UAE, and showcasing products at the Doha International Horticultural Expo.
