UK Tariff Suspension Expected to Boost Ethiopia’s Flower Exports


ADDIS ABABA: Starting today, the United Kingdom has removed an 8 percent tariff on cut flowers imported from Ethiopia, a change set to last until June 30, 2026.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, Executive Director of the Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association, this policy shift will significantly enhance Ethiopia’s ability to export flowers by allowing unlimited quantities to enter the UK at zero percent tariff, even if they transit through a third country. The move aims to increase the competitiveness of Ethiopian flower producers in the UK market.



Zewdie highlighted the importance of seizing this opportunity and called for improved support in land allocation and administrative services to boost investments in Ethiopia’s horticulture sector. Ethiopia is recognized as the second-largest cut flower producer in Africa, contributing 23 percent to the Sub-Saharan African export market.
