County Allocates Sh200 Million for Bursaries to Support Needy Students


Kakamega – Kakamega County has earmarked over 200 million shillings for bursaries to assist bright but financially disadvantaged students in the region. Governor Fernandes Barasa announced that the allocation for each of the 60 wards in the county has been increased to four million shillings, up from two million in the previous fiscal year.



According to Kenya News Agency, who made the announcement in Mumias Sub County, the total sum of 240 million shillings is intended to address the growing number of students requiring financial assistance. He detailed that the bursaries, set to be distributed in January next year, will cover students across secondary, tertiary institutions, and universities. The selection process for the beneficiaries will involve rigorous vetting, ensuring that the funds reach the most deserving students.



Successful applicants are expected to receive a minimum of 5000 shillings each to support their education expenses. Governor Barasa emphasized the formation of committees to supervise the bursary allocation process, ensuring fairness and priority to the most deserving cases at the grassroots level.



The Governor reiterated his commitment to enhancing the education sector in Kakamega County through various initiatives, including scholarships and bursaries at ward levels. He also mentioned that the County Government has allocated over 40 million shillings in scholarships to support students in both local and international educational institutions.



In partnership with ACCESS KENYA, the county has already distributed scholarships worth approximately 10.4 million shillings to students who have achieved a grade of C+ and above. Governor Barasa encouraged students to apply for these funds and assured that the county government is working in collaboration with the National Government through the Constituency Development Fund to support parents during these challenging economic times.
