Shabelle River Water Levels Rise, Prompting Official Warnings in Beledweyn

BELEDWEYN, Somalia – The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Federal Government of Somalia is alerting the public about the rising water levels of the Shabelle River in the town of Beledweyn.

According to News Releases by Somali National News Agency, on the midnight of October 21, 2023, the river’s water level exceeded the low flood risk threshold. Earlier, some areas faced flooding due to blocked sluice gates at the Dagahjabis canal. This issue was later addressed, allowing water to flow freely again. Despite the water level remaining above the high-risk threshold, the opening of sluice gates averted more severe flooding.

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Ahmed A. Adan led a meeting with international agencies and NGOs to collaborate on El Nino-related flood risks and humanitarian aid delivery.
