Training Workshop in Réo Focuses on Responsible Gold Mining Practices in Sanguié Province

Réo—A two-day training workshop addressing issues related to the Minamata convention, health, and safety at work took place in Réo on October 26 and 27, 2023. The event was chaired by the High Commissioner of Sanguié Province, Talari Germaine Ouoba, and aimed to benefit various stakeholders in the gold production chain.

According to Burkina Informational Agency, the workshop targeted actors in the artisanal gold production chain, including site managers, community leaders, and gold miners in Sanguié Province. The objective was to promote responsible gold mining practices in artisanal and small-scale operations to improve services and working conditions, with an emphasis on contributing to local development and mitigating the negative impacts of the sector.

High Commissioner Talari Germaine Ouoba highlighted that artisanal and small-scale gold mining has evolved into a major economic pillar in the rural areas of Burkina Faso. It provides livelihoods for over 2.5 million individuals, including women and children, thereby benefiting the entire country. However, Ouoba also noted that the current state of mining activities raises substantial challenges, including security issues, human rights violations, social problems, and environmental and health degradation among workers.

Ouoba further explained that improper ore extraction and processing techniques, along with the use of prohibited chemicals like cyanide and mercury, have become prevalent. This underscores the necessity for measures to protect both human health and the environment. She encouraged participants to actively engage in the training modules and discussions to emerge as more informed stakeholders in the mining industry.

Seydou Kabré, the country representative of the NGO Artisanal Gold Council, stated that diligent efforts are underway to ensure that the workshop’s objectives are met. He revealed that this event is a precursor to a detailed action plan focused on preventing work-related accidents and occupational illnesses.

During the workshop, participants were exposed to several modules. These covered topics such as “good personal protection practices on mining sites,” “health and environmental risks associated with the use of mercury and precautions to take,” “rescue and first aid,” and “health and safety in artisanal and small-scale mining.”
