Teso North Constituency Awards Scholarships to 24 Top KCPE Scorers

AMAGORO, KENYA – The Teso North Constituency National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) has granted full four-year scholarships to 24 students who achieved scores above 400 in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams. The awards were announced during a ceremony at the NGCDF office in Amagoro, where Teso North MP Oku Kaunya presented cheques and letters to the students.

According to Kenya News Agency, he commended the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, for providing a one-year scholarship to two students, Stacy Adhiambo and Lavin Maira, who will attend Alliance Girls High School from Malaba Township Primary School. The Speaker’s commitment to resume payment in 2024 was acknowledged. Kaunya also noted that two other top scorers received sponsorships from charitable organizations, while five NG-CDF beneficiaries were admitted to Lugulu Girls School.

The scholarship recipients include students joining prestigious schools such as Fiends School Kamusinga, Kapsabet Boys, Alliance Boys High School, Nairobi School, Kakamega High, St. Patrick’s Iten, and Pangani Girls. Each student received Ksh20,000 towards their tuition fees, with a promise to cover the remaining balance upon the release of CDF funds for the last financial year.

Expressing concern over the delay in CDF allocations for 2023-2024, Kaunya plans to request an emergency special sitting to secure funds for additional students. He thanked the National Government for providing bursaries to 29 students, Farida SACCO for sponsoring one student, and Equity Bank for supporting four students under the Wings to Fly programme.

The MP emphasized the importance of increasing secondary education sponsorship to combat poverty. Since its inception in 2021, the Teso North NG-CDF has allocated over Ksh12 million to sponsor students with 400 marks to university level. Kaunya intends to expand the program from 52 to 100 beneficiaries to increase the number of professionals like pilots, engineers, doctors, and lawyers in the region,

where 16 lawyers and eight engineers have already graduated.

Highlighting the academic achievements in the constituency, Kaunya praised parents, students, and teachers for producing record top grades in the KCPE. He also recognized Kolanya Girls National School for ranking as the second-best school in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

With the aim of making Teso North a model constituency, Kaunya aspires to establish top-performing schools and a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), noting the exceptional performance of students like Alex Oluka and Yvonne Idewa.
