Construction to Resume on Toropket-Kapnuria Road After Environmental Dispute Resolved

MARAKWET WEST, Kenya – The tarmacking of the Toropket-Kapnuria road, previously halted due to environmental concerns, is set to continue following a resolution between the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS). The construction had faced an impasse over the project’s impact on the surrounding forest area, specifically along the Chebororwa-Kokwongoi stretch which passes through forest land.

According to Kenya News Agency, the County Forest Conservator, the road’s planned route crosses approximately 5km of forest, raising significant environmental considerations. A key issue was the compensation for tree removal, which was required for the road’s construction. David Kibet, the Resident Engineer for the road project and the Director for KERRA in Elgeyo Marakwet County, highlighted the collaborative efforts with KFS officials to reach an amicable agreement.

As part of the resolution, KERRA has agreed to undertake tree replanting efforts in a designated area within the forest to compensate for the environmental impact of the construction. This initiative aims to balance the project’s development goals with the need to preserve the forest ecosystem. Kibet assured that measures have been put in place to ensure the construction proceeds smoothly, with specific instructions for the contractor to work in areas less dense with trees to minimize environmental disruption.

Kibet expressed optimism about the project’s progress, noting that, weather permitting, the road could be completed within four months. He also addressed community engagement, stating that the contractor has been hiring locally, which has helped to maintain a positive rapport with residents and avoid any conflict.

With the impasse now resolved and environmental concerns addressed, the construction of the Toropket-Kapnuria road is expected to advance without further delays. The completion of this project is anticipated to significantly improve connectivity and access for the local communities, facilitating economic and social development in the region.
