Lourenço Calls for Preservation of Geingob’s Legacy in SADC and Africa

Windhoek, Namibia – At the final memorial service for the late Hage Geingob, João Lourenço, President of Angola and chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), emphasized the importance of preserving Geingob’s legacy as a reference for achieving the objectives of SADC and Africa.

According to Namibia Press Agency, honoring Geingob’s contributions would pay homage to a significant figure in contemporary African history.

During his tenure as SADC chairperson in 2018, Geingob was instrumental in advancing the regional industrialization agenda, focusing on the development of infrastructure, youth empowerment, and sustainable growth. Lourenço highlighted Geingob’s advocacy for peace, stability, and security within the region, which he regarded as essential for economic and social development.

Lourenço remarked on the profound impact of Geingob’s work, noting that the scope of his achievements extends beyond what can be easily summarized. He acknowledged the deep sense of loss felt by the Namibian people but expressed confidence in their ability to transform their grief into determination to build a resilient and exemplary nation, following in Geingob’s footsteps towards stability, security, and peace.

The Angolan President also expressed solidarity with Namibia during this period of mourning, assuring them of support in these challenging times. Geingob’s burial is scheduled to take place at Heroes’ Acre in Windhoek on Sunday, accompanied by a 21-gun salute, marking a national moment of respect and remembrance for his contributions to Namibia and the broader African continent.
