Mopani District police arrested six male suspects for alleged possession of precious metals, unlicensed firearm and contravention of the Immigration Act

The Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has applauded the Mopani District Tracking Team following the apprehension of six male suspects in connection with possession of suspected precious metals (stones), Contravention of Immigration Act and possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition on Monday, 21 August 2023 at about 09:30.

The suspects aged between 24 and 48 were arrested at Makosha village under the Giyani Policing area after Police’ received information about six males who were travelling in a Grey Ford Ranger bakkie that was loaded with suspicious items.

The Team operationalised the information in joint collaboration with Giyani Public Order Policing (POPS) and the Directorate for Priority Crimes and Investigations (HAWKS). The motor vehicle fitting the description was spotted driving in the vicinity and was tactically approached and stopped.

Upon conducting a search of the motor vehicle with six occupants, one Lesotho National was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Upon a further search, Police discovered 10 bags containing precious metals, a generator and drill equipment.

The suspects were unable to account for the origin of the precious metals and other items and were immediately placed under arrest on the spot. Upon further investigations, Police discovered that three Zimbabwean and two Lesotho Nationals were in the country illegally without proper documentations.

A Ford Ranger bakkie and precious metals were confiscated by the police during the arrest for further investigations.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court soon facing charges of possession of suspected precious metals (stones), Contravention of Immigration Act and possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition.

Police investigations are continuing.
