Niger Government Commends Media’s Professionalism on Press Freedom Day

Ouagadougou, The Nigerien government has commended the professionalism and patriotism demonstrated by the national media since the beginning of the transition period on July 26, 2023. This appreciation was expressed by the Minister in charge of Communications, Raliou Sidi Mohamed, during the 10th edition commemoration of Niger Press Freedom Day. Mohamed noted that the Nigerien media, both print and audiovisual, have reconnected with their historical values of freedom of tone, independence, and professionalism. The theme of this year’s celebration, “What role can the online and audiovisual press play in the era of safeguarding the homeland?”, was chosen by the Collective of Journalists for the Promotion, Culture of Excellence and Good Governance. Mohamed emphasized the media’s role in building a new Niger, one that requires collective awareness and dedication to defending foundational values. He assured that the National Council for the Protection of the Homeland and the government are committed to preserving press freedom and improving the legal and professional media environment.

These statements come amidst calls from organizations like Reporters Without Borders for the Nigerien Transition to protect journalists and uphold media pluralism and independence.
