Kenyan Leaders Urge Citizens to Support Tree Planting Efforts for Climate Change Mitigation

Nairobi, Kenya – Key Kenyan leaders, including Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries, have called on citizens to participate in tree planting drives as a means of environmental conservation and climate change mitigation. In a significant event at Kodiaga Prison in Kisumu, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria highlighted the critical role of public servants in realizing the government’s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees.

According to Kenya News Agency, each government department and ministry has specific targets under the performance contracting and delivery management system to contribute to this national agenda. In Uasin Gishu County, the tree planting drive saw enthusiastic participation from local residents. At the Kaimur Wetland in Timboroa, Kesses Sub County, over 1.3 million tree seedlings were planted. The initiative was supported by various stakeholders, including Kenya Forest Service (KFS), National Youth Service (NYS), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA).

Susan Mang’eni, Principal Secretary for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development, encouraged the involvement of children in tree planting. She emphasized the role of trees in income generation and environmental conservation. Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Chelilim expressed his administration’s commitment to support the national government’s tree planting directive.
