Lake Victoria Basin Commission Announces Inaugural Celebration Day in November

KISUMU — The Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) has announced the establishment of an annual celebration day in November dedicated to Lake Victoria. This day aims to bring together scientists, environmentalists, government officials, financial institutions, and development partners to discuss and deliberate on the preservation and sustainability of Lake Victoria’s ecosystem.

According to Kenya News Agency, the inaugural event, themed ‘Revive and thrive: Uniting for Lake Victoria’s future,’ will rotate annually among the five East African Community (EAC) partner states. The celebration is designed to foster a collective action plan for the conservation of the lake, which is the world’s second-largest freshwater lake. The announcement was made during the 22nd Sectoral Council of Ministers on Lake Victoria Basin (SECOM-LVB) held in Kisumu.

The day will feature a range of activities, including a scientific conference where researchers and organizations will present findings on various lake-related topics such as pollution, water quality, and sustainable resource management. Dr. Bwire highlighted pollution as a critical challenge that has been deteriorating the lake’s health over the past four decades, underscoring the urgent need for a collaborative effort among EAC partner states to combat this issue.

The establishment of Lake Victoria Day represents a significant step towards uniting regional efforts in tackling environmental challenges and ensuring the long-term sustainability of this vital ecosystem.
