Kitui Government Cracks Down on Illegal Mining Operations

KITUI, Kenya – The Kenyan Government has initiated a stringent crackdown on illegal mining activities within Kitui County, asserting that violators will face severe legal repercussions. This declaration was made by Salim Mvurya, the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, during discussions with local leadership in Kitui.

According to Kenya News Agency, the government’s recent actions underscore a commitment to eradicate unauthorized mining across the nation, emphasizing legal compliance for all mining undertakings. In a meeting at the Kitui Governor’s office, Mvurya highlighted the importance of obtaining proper mining licenses and detailed the government’s plan to collaborate with county administrations to oversee and validate mining operations through established County Mining Committees.

In response to the challenges faced by artisanal miners, the government has introduced Artisanal Mining Committees in all 47 counties to facilitate licensing processes and support for local miners. Mvurya urged unlicensed miners to organize into societies for better assistance and oversight, stressing the economic potential of Kitui’s rich mineral deposits, which rank second in the country.

The meeting, attended by Kitui Governor Julius Malombe and local MPs, addressed the distribution of mining revenues, underscoring the need for legislative amendments to ensure fair community benefits and enhance county revenues. The Kitui leadership, alongside Mvurya, pledged to document and exploit the county’s mineral wealth responsibly, aiming to translate this natural resource into economic gain for the region and its residents.

As the government vows to clamp down on illegal mining and enforce regulatory compliance, local authorities express their readiness to support these measures, advocating for adherence to environmental and legal standards to foster sustainable development in Kitui’s mining sector.
