Justice and Correctional Services Committee Completes Interviews for SAHRC Vacancies

CAPE TOWN – The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services has completed its interview process for filling six vacancies at the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

According to Parliament of South Africa, Committee Chairperson Mr. Bulelani Magwanishe, the process involved interviewing candidates for four full-time and two part-time posts.

Candidate Selection and Interviews

Out of thirteen shortlisted candidates, one was disqualified for not providing fingerprints for screening. The remaining candidates, including four current SAHRC commissioners, underwent a thorough interview process. The committee’s selection criteria, based on the South African Human Rights Commission Act, emphasize candidates’ commitment to human rights and relevant experience.

Interviewees and Security Screening

The candidates interviewed include Adv Sandra Makoasha, Mr. Aseza Arthur Gungubele, Dr. Willem Hendrik Boshoff, Mr. Kamohelo Rodney Teele, Mr. Vernon Roderick Seymour, Ms. Elspeth Nomahlubi Berlinda Khwinana, Mr. Andrew Christoffel Nissen, Mr. Grant Reagon, Prof. Bongani Christopher Majola, Mr. Jonas Ben Sibanyoni, Prof. Tshepo Madlingozi, and Adv André Gaum. Mr. Magwanishe clarified that the committee is awaiting the results of the State Security Agency’s security screenings.

Next Steps in the Selection Process

The committee plans to reconvene, if necessary, based on the outcome of the security screenings. Their intention is to finalize recommendations for the SAHRC vacancies before the National Assembly’s year-end adjournment.
