Turkana County Launches Refurbishment of Kangitulae Irrigation Scheme


KIBISH, Kenya — The residents of Kibish Sub-County in Turkana are set to benefit from the refurbishment of the Kangitulae irrigation scheme, a project initiated by the county government aimed at enhancing food security and promoting socio-economic development.



According to Kenya News Agency, the Turkana County Acting Director for Irrigation, the project focuses on the development and self-reliance of the community by enabling the production of crops for both subsistence and commercial purposes.



The refurbishment work includes the drilling and equipping of a borehole, construction of perimeter fencing, and the establishment of concrete skirting around a 5-acre farm. Additionally, the scheme will be equipped with an elevated steel tank and drip lines to facilitate vegetable crop production. Loree emphasized the county government’s commitment to advancing irrigation projects as a means to improve food production within the county.



The project, expected to be completed within six months, is a response to the community’s growing interest in irrigation farming as a sustainable solution to the challenges of food production in the region. Kaaleng/Kaikor MCA Abdifatah Kapua, present at the handover ceremony, commended the initiative and urged the community to support the project’s successful implementation without politicizing its objectives.



Engineering and financial oversight for the project is provided by Eng. Ekeno Charles, Pius Ekidor (Accountant), and Eliud Ewoi (Sub County Land Reclamation Officer), ensuring quality, timely, and effective delivery of the refurbishment works. The Kangitulae irrigation scheme represents a significant step towards achieving food security and economic empowerment for the residents of Kibish Sub-County.
