Burkina Faso and Niger Withdraw from G5 Sahel

Ouagadougou – Burkina Faso and the Republic of Niger have officially withdrawn from the G5 Sahel as of November 29, 2023. This decision was announced in a joint press release, citing the influence of foreign partners in the regional anti-terrorism institution as the primary reason for their departure. The countries assert that these foreign influences prioritize their own interests over those of the Sahel region.

According to Burkina Information Agency, this move follows the Republic of Mali’s exit from the G5 Sahel in May 2022, citing similar concerns. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have since formed the Alliance of Sahel States, committing to a united front against terrorism and mutual defense against aggression.
