17-Year-Old Candidate Gives Birth, Continues Exams in Makueni County

Kathozweni, Kenya—A 17-year-old standard 8 pupil at Ung’atani Primary School in Kathozweni Sub County gave birth to a baby girl at Makueni County Referral Hospital last night.

According to Kenya News Agency, County Director of Education (CDE) Mr. Charles Nyakundi, the girl and her baby are in good health. “The girl is in good health, and she is sitting for a mathematics paper this morning and later English and composition,” said Nyakundi in a telephone interview with KNA on Monday.

Nyakundi also mentioned that the examinations in the county have started without any problems, adding that all logistical arrangements, including transport and security, have been set in place. According to area Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Joel Mwangala, those caught engaging in examination malpractices will face serious consequences. Mwangala issued the warning while distributing examination papers to center managers in Makueni County.

Present during the distribution were Makueni Sub-County Director of Education Yobesh Onduso Magara and his counterpart from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Edward Dzani. The KCPE and KPSEA examinations have 26,835 and 34,794 candidates respectively in Makueni County. In addition, 30,149 candidates are slated to sit for the KCSE exams, which will begin on November 6th and run through November 24th, 2023.
