Police Arrest 28 Individuals in Connection with Human Trafficking, Money Laundering and Immigration Violations

POLOKWANE – A coordinated law enforcement operation led to the arrest of 28 individuals for various charges including human trafficking, money laundering, and contravention of the Immigration Act. The arrest took place on Sunday, October 29, 2023, in Mooketsi outside Tzaneen along the R81 road.

According to South Africa Police Service, the operation was initiated after an alert from two local taxi associations concerning a white minibus Toyota Quantum that was seen traveling along the R81 road. Upon reaching the scene, authorities discovered two South African male suspects—a driver and a 28-year-old accomplice—along with 23 undocumented male persons of Somalian nationality. A Volkswagen Golf appeared on the scene, picked up the 28-year-old suspect, and fled. Sixty-four cross-border permits were discovered in the Toyota Quantum.

Subsequently, two additional suspects aged 33 and 47 arrived at the Modjadjiskloof police station, demanding the release of the 28-year-old male. Their vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux double cab, was searched, revealing banknotes amounting to R415,820 hidden under the seat.

The Department of Home Affairs and Social Development was consulted to aid in the processing of the Immigration Act contravention cases, which also involved minors.

Ongoing investigations are underway for the cases involving human trafficking, money laundering, and contravention of the Immigration Act. The police have activated a manhunt for the 28-year-old male suspect who evaded arrest. They urge anyone with information that could assist in locating the suspect to contact Investigating Officer Captain Mohale Raholane at 082 445 7600 or report the information to the nearest Police Station or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Information can also be submitted anonymously via the MySAPS App.

The arrested individuals are expected to appear before the Bolobedu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, October 31, 2023.
