Githunguri Foundation Champions Community Development and Sustainability

GITHUNGURI, Kenya – The Githunguri Dairy and Community Sacco Limited (GDC) has launched a significant community service program through its GDC Foundation, aiming to enhance social welfare and economic development in the region. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to corporate social responsibility and community engagement.

According to Kenya News Agency, Irene Karungu, the GDC Foundation is now serving 150,000 members as of March 2024, with an emphasis on clean energy, dairy production support, member subsidies, and youth empowerment. The organization is actively seeking to integrate more young people into its programs, offering them employment opportunities and engagement in its various projects.

The foundation has made substantial contributions to the community, including the donation of water storage tanks, solar lamps, and biogas units to promote clean energy usage among its members. Additionally, the Pambazuka housing cooperative initiative under the foundation has provided affordable housing solutions for women, enabling them to secure stable and empowering living conditions.

Medical and nutritional support are also key aspects of the foundation’s outreach, with free medical camps and regular food donations aimed at alleviating healthcare and food security challenges in Githunguri. Moreover, the foundation supports local dairy farmers by offering discounted quality semen for cattle breeding, enhancing dairy production quality and efficiency.

The foundation’s impact is illustrated by stories like that of Gachene Kamau, a local farmer who has benefited from the foundation’s livestock donation program, significantly improving his family’s livelihood through enhanced dairy production.

Since its inception in December 2022, the GDC Foundation has played a pivotal role in Githunguri’s development, contributing to the parent company’s rise as one of Kenya’s leading milk processors. These efforts underscore the foundation’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and prosperous community, reflecting a successful model of corporate social responsibility.
