Burkina Faso to Launch Electric Car Production and Replace Government Fleet

OUAGADOUGOU – In a significant move towards sustainability and cost-saving, President Ibrahim Traoré has announced plans to establish an electric car production plant in Burkina Faso by the end of 2024.

According to Burkina Information Agency, this initiative will lead to the replacement of all government vehicles with electric cars, aiming to significantly reduce the government’s fuel consumption. The announcement was made during a meeting with the Forces Vives of the Center-East in celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8.

Furthermore, President Traoré revealed plans for the recreation of the National Office of Dams and Hydro-Agricultural Developments (ONBAH), which had ceased operations due to structural adjustment programs. He also intends to reinvigorate the National Society for Land Development and Rural Equipment (SONATER) to enhance agricultural equipment availability and engineer resources. The President’s initiatives signal a comprehensive approach to modernizing the country’s infrastructure and agricultural sectors, despite anticipated resistance from those who benefit from the current system.
