Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis’ remarks during the debate on a current question by MeRA 25 MP Kriton Arsenis on Greece’s support for the inclusion of environmental protection in the European Convention on Human Rights (Hellenic Parliament, 24.02.2023)

“The environment cannot be absent from the competencies of the Council of Europe if we want to bequeath to future generations a better world than the one we have inherited”, Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis underscored in response to a current question by MeRA 25 MP Kriton Arsenis on “Greece’s support for the inclusion of the protection of the natural environment in the European Convention on Human Rights” in the Hellenic Parliament.

In particular, Mr. Varvitsiotis stated that the Council of Europe is a beacon for the protection of European values, adding that the Greek government stands on the side of defending international environmental standards and the protection of the environment.
The Alternate Minister recalled that the government is working towards decarbonization and reducing reliance on fossil fuels at both domestic and European levels, noting that Greece has reached a level of over 50% participation of RES in its energy mix.
