Niger Commences Phase II of Agadem Oil Production for Export

Agadem, On November 1, the transition leader of Niger, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, officiated the commissioning ceremony marking the commencement of oil production for export at Koulélé. The momentous event saw the attendance of the Minister of Mines and Oil and Energy, Moustapha BARKE, alongside a host of other dignitaries. Additionally, ministers from Mali and Burkina Faso, fellow member countries of the Sahel Alliance, were present to witness the inauguration.

According to Burkina Information Agency, this project signifies a milestone for Niger, instilling hope for the country’s development through substantial income generation and job creation, particularly for the youth. The Ministry of Oil, WAPCO staff, and the Nigerien authorities were commended for their relentless efforts to bring the project to fruition despite encountering challenges, including sanctions and sabotage actions from certain partners. The project is anticipated to substantially benefit local communities, fostering new business opportunities for both Nigerian and broader African suppliers.

The oil production for export is set to increase fivefold, reaching a capacity of 100,000 barrels per day. This product will be transported through a nearly 2000 km long oil pipeline, extending all the way to the port of Cotonou in Benin. Since 2011, Niger has positioned itself as an oil-producing country, operating under a sharing contract with a Chinese company.
