The 1990s were a crucial period for South Africa, marked by its transition to democracy. The success of this transition, despite numerous challenges, attests to the collective efforts of South Africans from diverse backgrounds. Since the landmark year of 1994, the country has continuously worked to address the lingering effects of its divided past, with successive administrations focusing on improving the lives of its people.

Currin emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration for the common good, reflecting on the need to follow in the footsteps of those who laid the foundation for South Africa’s democracy. He highlighted the significance of a social compact and the understanding that the government alone cannot resolve all problems. Instead, a collective approach involving active citizen participation is necessary.

Currin also shed light on current initiatives, such as a government-led campaign to enhance food security and promote sustainable living practices. This campaign involves a wide range of social partners and focuses on changing attitudes and behaviors towards environmental conservation and community cleanliness.

The campaign comprises two interconnected aspects: environmental actions for a cleaner and greener country, and encouraging the creation of household and communal gardens to tackle food insecurity and unemployment. Such initiatives are viewed as blueprints for individual and collective efforts towards realizing a sustainable, food-secure nation.

Currin called for active citizenship, urging South Africans not to ignore wrongdoing or criminality and to actively participate in community initiatives. For instance, organizing local clean-up drives and practicing recycling can significantly contribute to improving communities.

Additionally, he stressed the role of citizens in addressing the energy crisis by adopting energy-saving practices, especially during times of constrained supply. Such efforts are crucial for sustaining the democracy achieved through collective struggles.

He encouraged citizens to register and vote, emphasizing that their participation is key to advancing the country. Online voter registration, available since February 2023, provides an accessible option for those with internet access.

Currin’s message is a call to action for South Africans to harness their resilience and play an active role in shaping a prosperous future for the nation and its coming generations.
