Kiambu County to Gain Modern Market in Wangige Under Government Project

KIAMBU, KENYA – Kiambu County traders are poised to benefit from a new multi-million three-story modern market in Wangige, Kabete Sub County. This development is part of President William Ruto’s initiative to enhance local commerce.

According to Kenya News Agency, who spoke at a public participation meeting held at Bishop Kariuki Integrated Community Training Centre in Wangige, the President’s flagship program aims to establish five modern markets across various sub-counties in Kiambu County. “The plan includes constructing a three-story market in Wangige and additional markets at Madaraka Market, two in Ruiru, Kangangi market in Kiambu town, and the Githunguri market,” Wamatangi explained.

Under President Ruto’s leadership, the national government has allocated Sh400 million for the Wangige market project, complemented by an additional Sh150 million from the county administration. The Governor assured local traders of the provision of a temporary trading location during the construction phase of the new market.

The multi-storeyed business hub, designed to accommodate approximately 700 traders, aims to enhance the working environment in Wangige town. “The facility is expected to be completed in 13 months, allowing traders to return to their spaces soon,” stated the governor.

This public participation event followed the approval of the market’s design by architects from the Kenya School of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVETs). During the meeting, residents expressed their concerns and requests, focusing on space allocation and market leadership. “We are asking the governor to ensure that we retain our trading spaces after construction and to allow us to elect our market leader for efficient management,” a trader noted.

Governor Wamatangi praised the traders and elected leaders in Kabete Constituency for supporting the construction. He emphasized that the tender process would be transparent and fair. “The advertisement for the tender will be issued next, and I assure the people of Wangige that space allocation in the new facility will be transparent,” he affirmed.

In July of the previous year, President Ruto announced a Sh13 billion government allocation for constructing new markets across various counties. Kiambu County received Sh3 billion from this national government fund for the construction of five markets.
