National Development Implementation Committee Focuses on Accelerating Key Projects in Coast and North Eastern Regions

Mombasa, Kenya – A concerted effort to resolve existing bottlenecks hampering government projects in the Coast and North Eastern regions has been initiated by the National Development Implementation Committee (NDIC). Officials aim to ensure that citizens reap the maximum benefits from ongoing government projects and programmes.

According to a new release by Kenya News Agency, the commitment was made during a meeting of the sub-committee in charge of Governance and Public Administration. The meeting was chaired by Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, and included multiple high-ranking officials such as Solicitor General Hon. Shadrack Mose and various Principal Secretaries. “We shall focus on government programmes that are going on both in the Coast and North Eastern regions so that we are able to unlock the bottlenecks,” said Dr. Omollo.

Following the meeting, the committee members embarked on a tour to evaluate ongoing projects in the region. Their first stop was the Sh2.6 billion Shimoni Fishing Project, managed by the Kenya Ports Authority. The project aims to boost fish production and improve livelihoods in the Kwale and Coast regions. The industrial port will attract large fishing vessels currently favoring Port Victoria in Seychelles, noted Dr. Omollo.

The team also toured the Kenya Shipyard Limited (KSL), an agency within the Ministry of Defence that provides maintenance for naval, shipping, and transport vessels. Additionally, the committee inspected the Miritini Rehabilitation Center, which is crucial for rehabilitating those affected by drug and substance abuse. This facility is being expanded at a cost of Sh87 million and Sh115 million for a multipurpose facility and workshops respectively.

The team concluded their tour with a visit to the government chemist, responsible for supporting forensic laboratories and managing pharmaceutical products. The sub-committee has committed to enhancing the capacity of this chemist to make it more efficient.
