Late Goal by Dago Secures 1-1 Draw for 1º de Agosto Against Petro de Luanda in Girabola Opening Round

Luanda—In a match that went down to the wire, 1º de Agosto managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Petro de Luanda in the opening round of the Girabola 2023/24 National Football Championship.

According to a new release by Angola Press News Agency, Dago scored the equalizing goal during stoppage time at 90 minutes plus three, ensuring that his team would avoid defeat.

The match, which was played at Coqueiros Stadium, attracted a crowd of eight thousand spectators and was characterized by its intense rivalry, as it featured the two most titled teams in Angola. Petro de Luanda took the lead at 63 minutes with a goal scored by Erivaldo.

Although Petro de Luanda seemed to be in control and was more focused on managing the game, 1º de Agosto maintained their hopes and continued to exert pressure. Their perseverance paid off during stoppage time, when Dago’s well-placed shot found its way into the net, giving goalkeeper Hugo Marques no chance to make a save.

While the match might not have lived up to the high expectations in terms of excitement, it did indicate the level of competitiveness expected in the season ahead. The championship’s historical record shows Petro de Luanda with 17 trophies and 1º de Agosto with 13. The draw marks the 16th between the two teams in their last 60 encounters. In those matches, 1º de Agosto won 23 and scored 59 goals, while Petro won 22 games and scored 65 goals.
