Faso Mediator and PAEA Engage Kourwéogo Province in Water Supply and Conflict Resolution Awareness

Boussé – The Mediator of Faso, in collaboration with the Water Supply and Sanitation Program (PAEA), held an awareness-raising session in Boussé on December 14, 2023. This initiative aimed to familiarize the local population of Kourwéogo province with the Mediator institution, its conflict resolution role, and the PAEA’s water supply projects.

According to Burkina Information Agency, held at the Boussé youth center, was attended by representatives of the Kourwéogo province. According to the organizing partners, the purpose of this event was to enhance understanding of PAEA’s initiatives and to bring the Mediator of Faso’s services closer to the citizens. The day featured two presentations on the PAEA and the Mediator of Faso institution and included a dedicated space for registering disputes or conflict situations.

Mahamadou Badini, speaking for the PAEA, explained that the program, established in 2018 with a five-year duration, is financially supported by the World Bank. Its objective is to develop knowledge of Burkina Faso’s groundwater and surface water resources and establish a management framework. Badini outlined the program’s contributions to improving access to drinking water and sanitation across 66 municipalities in seven regions, including significant infrastructure developments in Boussé.

Additionally, the PAEA has implemented a complaints management system for addressing potential issues, with different levels of resolution depending on the case’s complexity. Badini emphasized the Mediator of Faso’s role in handling complaints related to non-compliance with rules, unfair treatment, and instances of fraud and corruption.

Noël Quentin Rouamba, the chief of staff of the Mediator of Faso and head of the mission, presented an overview of the Mediator institution. He detailed its history, responsibilities, organization, operational procedures, expertise areas, limitations, and various referral processes. Rouamba also discussed the institution’s conflict resolution mechanisms, noting its successful mediations in approximately 1,500 cases over a quarter-century.

Ibrahima Traoré, the coordinator in charge of appeals at the Mediator of Faso, highlighted the institution’s successful interventions in resolving individual and community conflicts. Participants expressed their appreciation for the valuable insights and guidance provided by the institution.
