Women Leaders Advocate for Enhanced Parenting During Festive Season

Narok County, Kenya: a group of women leaders, including Narok women representative Rebecca Tonkei, have called for increased parental involvement and guidance for young parents and youths to combat drug and substance abuse during the festive season. This appeal was made at a book launch event hosted by Lydia Ntimama in Narok town.
According to Kenya News Agency, the youth globally face significant challenges with drug abuse, highlighting the importance of parental guidance in fostering a healthy society. She revealed that the government has initiated a program to tackle this issue.

The event, held at the home of Lydia Ntimama’s father, also served as a platform for leaders to emphasize the importance of spending time with children during the holidays and imparting positive values to shape them into responsible citizens. Narok North Member of Parliament, Agnes Pareiyo, urged parents in the County to avoid corporal punishment and ensure the safety of school-going girls in anticipation of the upcoming school year.

Andrew Sunkuli, a politician and author, commented on the modern challenges faced by parents, especially with the rise of electronic entertainment, and stressed the need for parents to be more involved in their children’s lives. He advocated for close parental engagement to provide the necessary guidance.

Lydia Ntimama, reflecting on the changes in parenting styles, noted the shift from the authoritarian approach of the early 1990s, where parents were more controlling, to a more communicative and interactive style. She advocated for parents to actively engage in conversations with their children, fostering a more open and understanding relationship.
