Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Calls for Intelligence-Based Disarmament in North Rift

ELGEYO MARAKWET: Governor Wisley Rotich of Elgeyo Marakwet has proposed a new approach to disarmament in the North Rift region, focusing on intelligence-based strategies. During a meeting with the Senate Committee on National Security, Defense, and Foreign Relations, Rotich emphasized the need for targeted disarmament rather than blanket crackdowns, which often victimize innocent people.

According to Kenya News Agency, Rotich highlighted that illegal arms have been a significant factor in conflicts within the Kerio Valley, causing small disagreements to escalate into full-scale wars. The governor suggested the use of technology, like drones and microchips on livestock, to enhance security measures and track livestock during raids.

The governor’s proposal includes equipping security personnel with necessary tools and technology to respond effectively to criminal activities in the region. He also stressed the importance of adjudicating land and constructing schools, especially in Tiaty Sub County, to address the routes used by criminals and promote education.

County Commissioner John Korir echoed the need for government support, particularly in reinstating stipends for police reservists and peace committee members who play crucial roles in maintaining peace.

Senator William Cheptumo, chair of the Senate Committee, encouraged county governments to support security funding efforts. However, Governor Rotich pointed out financial constraints, with a significant portion of the county’s budget consumed by recurrent expenditures. He urged the Commission on Revenue Allocation to consider allocating more funds to counties dealing with insecurity.

The meeting was also attended by Vice Chair Karen Nyamu, Senator Fatuma Dullo, and host Senator William Kisang, highlighting the collaborative effort required to address security challenges in the region.
