Gichugu’s Affordable Housing Project Boosts Local Economy and Employment

The Gichugu affordable housing project, initiated by President William Ruto, has become a significant source of livelihood in Kianyaga, Gichugu Constituency, Kirinyaga County. Launched on August 20, 2022, the project, costing Sh270 million and fully funded by the national government, is expected to complete within 11 months.

According to Kenya News Agency, Director of the Affordable Housing and Market Programme, the project comprises 110 units, including 3-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and studio apartments. Muchiri highlighted the economic stimulation in Gichugu resulting from the project, citing employment opportunities in construction, welding, plumbing, and local eateries. He noted that 95% of the workers are local, with the remaining 5% being experts, including those from the Ministry of Housing. Muchiri also mentioned the project’s commitment to gender inclusivity, ensuring at least a third of the workforce consists of local women. Engineer Samuel Wambugu, the contractor, remarked on the smooth progress of the program and its positive impact on the community. Local residents, including Jane Garoko and Charles Mwangi, expressed gratitude for the employment opportunities, which have helped them support their families and avoid drug abuse. Rose Wanjiku shared that the project’s earnings would assist in settling school fee arrears.
