Turkana Governor Pledges Partnership with National Government for Regional Development

Turkana, Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai of Turkana County has announced his commitment to collaborating with Kenyan President William Ruto to advance the development of Turkana. In a statement made in Nameyana, Turkwel Ward, the Governor emphasized the essential role of both county and national governments in meeting the development needs of Turkana.

According to Kenya News Agency, recent discussions with President Ruto have resulted in Turkana securing commitments for significant projects backed by the national government. These projects are centered around Lake Turkana’s blue economy initiatives and essential water projects. “Following our engagements with the president, we have received resources for Lake Turkana’s blue economy and water projects,” Lomorukai noted, stressing the active involvement of Turkana leaders in ensuring the region’s development priorities are addressed.

The Governor also highlighted the ongoing efforts of local leaders to pursue the interests of Turkana residents, prioritizing the community’s needs over personal gain. He detailed the engagement with various national ministries as part of the collaborative efforts.

During a fundraising event supporting the Nameyana Neema Women Group, Governor Lomorukai underscored his administration’s focus on accountability in the management of public funds, a cornerstone of the governance reforms promised to the residents. He alluded to previous audit challenges, asserting the need to maintain strict oversight on the use of allocated funds to avoid further scrutiny and potential allegations of financial mismanagement.

In recognition of local leaders’ performance, the Governor applauded Woman Representative Cecilia Ng’itit for her national distinction as the top performing representative in Kenya, underlining the capacity of Turkana’s leaders.

Governor Lomorukai further advocated for the peaceful coexistence of border communities with West Pokot and Baringo, condemning any actions by leaders from neighboring countries that could incite political violence.

The call to action continued with Loima MP Protus Akuja encouraging Turkana residents to participate in the upcoming national identity card registration drive. Similarly, Leader of Majority Stephen Edukon urged the community to engage with government programs aimed at empowerment.

Present at the event were senior county officials including County Executives Dr. Michael Eregae of Finance and James Wangiros of Public Service, as well as Chief Officers across various departments, all who stand as integral parts of Governor Lomorukai’s developmental strategy for Turkana.
