Makango Floods Claim One Life, Displace Thousands in East Gonja Municipality

MAKANGO – A devastating flood has claimed a life and resulted in the displacement of hundreds of residents in the Makango area of East Gonja Municipality, located in the Savannah Region.

According to a new release by the Ghana News Agency, a former Assembly Member of the Makango Electoral Area, the overflow of the Volta Lake has led to flooding in Makango and neighboring areas, including Abelekura, Soldierkope, and Titikura. Mr. Richard Broni, the East Gonja Municipal Chief Executive, cited data from the National Disaster Management Organisation which indicates that around 3,300 people have been displaced, and 792 houses have been submerged as a result of the floods.

Mr. Broni mentioned ongoing discussions with regional and national stakeholders to garner support from both governmental and private entities to aid the flood victims. Residents have been advised to move to higher ground due to fears of further displacement and danger if the rains persist.
