The Provincial Commissioner welcomes the court appearance of four suspects involved in torching the state vehicle


The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed the arrest of suspects who were allegedly involved in the torching of the Police vehicle at Thohoyandou Police Station.



The arrest and subsequent court appearance of these suspects follow incidents of public violence that erupted on the University of Venda campus more than a week ago. There were several damage to infrastructure, property, vehicles at the time.



The Police in Thohoyandou launched a search for suspects after those incidents, and evidently, succeeded in arresting the four suspects in connection with the torching of the police vehicle that happened in Parking at Thohoyandou on Tuesday evening, 12 September, 2023.



According to reports, the suspects, who are students from the University of Venda, were linked to the incident of burning to ashes a police vehicle following the demonstration that occurred in front of the Thohoyandou Police Station.



The suspects were apprehended on Thursday, 21 September 2023, while at their hideouts in different areas of the Vhembe District.



Nedzanani Elekanyani (22), Mutepe Lufuno (22), Tshamano Gudani Loyd (25), and Luthungi Lufuno (23) appeared before the Thohoyandou Magistrate Court on Friday 22 September 2023.



They are facing charges of malicious damage to property and public violence.



They were remanded in the Police’s custody until the next court appearance on Tuesday 26 September 2023 for further Police investigations and bail applications.



Police investigations are continuing.
