Kirinyaga Residents to Benefit from New Water Projects

Kirinyaga: Governor Anne Waiguru announced the distribution of water pipes for the Mbeti B and Kiangima Water projects in Kirinyaga on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards improving access to water for domestic and agricultural purposes. Approximately 7,000 residents in the Inoi ward are set to benefit from these projects.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Mbeti B project, sourcing water from the Kiringa River, will serve the villages of Thaita, Kangaita, Mugwandi, Kiandieri, Kabumbu, and Gitumbi. The Kiangima water project, drawing water from the Rutui River and Kangaita stream, will benefit the villages of Kiawakara, Kagunyu, and Thaita. This initiative is part of her administration’s comprehensive plan to enhance access to water for both domestic use and irrigation, contributing to over 70 water projects completed in the county.

The governor highlighted the county’s efforts in sinking boreholes, distributing water pipes and fittings, constructing water tanks for community projects, and rehabilitating major rivers like Thiba and Nyamindi. She also mentioned the upcoming construction of the South Ngariama-Murinduko and Nyamindi Dams in Mwea and the Gikumbo Dam in Ndia/Central, which aim to expand land under irrigation and boost rice production.

The county has allocated Sh115 million for the rehabilitation of irrigation canals in the Mwea irrigation scheme. Waiguru emphasized the importance of irrigation in enhancing agricultural productivity, drought mitigation, crop yield, and environmental sustainability.

Kirinyaga County Assembly Majority Leader Daniel Murithii Kivanga urged local leaders to unite for the development of the region and encouraged youths to engage in agricultural activities, leveraging the increased water availability. Area Member of the County Assembly Fredrick Maina echoed this sentiment, advocating for youth involvement in development projects like farming, which contribute to the county’s economic growth.
