SoDMA Alerts Public on Flood Risks Amid Heavy Rains in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Somali National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has issued a public warning about the risks of flooding and displacement following recent heavy rains across various regions of Somalia.

According to News Releases by Somali National News Agency, October 21, 2023, Director Khadar Sheikh Mohamed Nur informed the media and the public about the situation and the potential impact of the rains. He stated that the rains were a result of the El Niño phenomenon, expected to peak in late 2023 or early 2024.

SoDMA is actively monitoring weather patterns and has prepared contingency plans to mitigate flood risks. The agency is coordinating with both international and local partners to mobilize resources and strengthen the capabilities of local authorities and communities in handling potential emergencies.

Director Nur emphasized the importance of adhering to the guidance and warnings provided by SoDMA and other relevant agencies. He recommended precautionary measures such as avoiding flood-prone areas, relocating to higher ground when necessary, and reporting any emergencies to SoDMA or other authorities.

In addition, the director urged media outlets and civil society organizations to assist in educating the public about the El Niño phenomenon and its potential impacts, to better prepare communities for the weather conditions.
