Laingsburg Police Arrest Five for Possession of Suspected Stolen Goods

WESTERN CAPE – In a concerted effort to safeguard essential infrastructure and curb economic crimes, the Laingsburg police have arrested five individuals for possession of suspected stolen goods along the N1.

According to South African Police Service, the first incident occurred early on Friday, November 24, 2023, at about 05:00. Members of the Laingsburg police, while patrolling the N1 between Matjiesfontein and Laingsburg, stopped a vehicle that appeared suspicious. During a thorough search, the officers discovered bundles of copper wire in the vehicle’s boot. The four occupants, unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for possessing the wire, were arrested on charges of possession of suspected stolen property.

These four suspects, aged between 31 and 42, are currently being held in custody. They are expected to appear in the Laingsburg Magistrates’ Court on the related charges.

In a separate but related incident on Sunday, November 26, 2023, Laingsburg police acted on intelligence regarding illegal activities along the N1. They apprehended a man found with bundles of wire, leading to his arrest on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property. This suspect, in his early twenties, remains in police custody and will be brought to court once formally charged.

These arrests are part of a larger initiative by the police to protect key infrastructure and address crimes that threaten the economy’s viability. The police in the region are committed to continuing such operations to ensure that perpetrators of such crimes are effectively apprehended and prosecuted.
