• WFP continued its essential work to transform food systems and reach vulnerable households through its value chain, nutrition and food security policy support to the government and people of Ghana.

• Under the nutrition intervention in Karaga, northern region, 2,475 beneficiaries comprised of caretakers of children aged 6-23 months, pregnant and lactating women (PLW) and adolescent girls at-risk of malnutrition received vouchers. 1,524 caretakers were issued monthly vouchers valued at USD 7 to cover the cost of supplementary feeding a small child, while 753 PLW and 198 adolescent girls received vouchers valued at USD 16. The vouchers were redeemed for a diverse selection of local food items such as maize, millet, fruit and green and leafy vegetables.

KOKO Plus, a micro-nutrient powder was available as a fortified option for children aged 6-23 months. Caretakers of young children were sensitized to the benefits of choosing KOKO Plus and voluntarily continued to select it as part of their food basket.

• Karaga district was targeted due to the severity of its food insecurity and adolescent girls were supported because of their proximity to motherhood and to prevent negative sex-based coping strategies. Preference was given to households receiving government assistance under Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme and other resource-poor households.

• Under the integrated livelihoods and nutrition project in Karaga,

WFP reached 574 men, 1348 women and 833 adolescent girls with social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) messages related to health and nutrition. WFP distributed 21 Samsung Smart Televisions to health facilities to showcase SBCC messages to community members. The integrated project weaves in mother -to-mother (MTM) and father-to-father (FTF) groups with livelihood training in backyard gardening, tailoring and other income-generating activities. 83 MTM and 35 FTF support groups were established in October. In November, 2,640 Ghana Health Service staff were trained in SBCC.

• In October – November 2022, WFP and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) jointly facilitated a training of 37 experts on Capacity for Disaster Reduction Initiative (CADRI) methodology to assess disaster and climate risks. WFP Ghana also supported the National Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Programme’s exchange visit with the Benin School Feeding Programme and the Songhai Centre to learn about school feeding best practices and innovation.

• WFP continues to provide technical support to Ghanaian company Premium Foods Limited to supply specialized nutritious foods for its operations in West Africa and globally. Providing jobs and foreign exchange to Ghana, 5,687 mt of food valued at USD 7.5 million has been sold by Premium Foods under WFP’s GCMF facility in support of operations in the region such as Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Mauritania.
