Ouagadougou: The trial concerning the embezzlement of 3 billion CFA francs and the subscription to universal health insurance have captured the attention of Wednesday’s daily newspapers. The state-run daily, Sidwaya, highlights the headline “Subscribing to universal health insurance: Prime Minister sets an example,” indicating the proactive step taken by the Prime Minister, Apollinaire Joachimson Kyélem of Tambéla, who now possesses a registration number with the Universal Health Insurance (AMU).

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Prime Minister emphasized that subscribing to the insurance is a basic necessity that will aid individuals in managing their health care needs in the event of illness. This initiative is supported by Soumaila Gansonré, the head of the structure, who clarified that workers in the formal sector will contribute 5% of their gross salary monthly towards this scheme, with a split of 2.5% each from workers and employers.

On another front, significant developments were reported
regarding the trial of the embezzlement of 3 billion CFA francs at the ministry responsible for humanitarian action. Sidwaya disclosed that the court has compelled Amidou Tiégnan, the primary defendant, to find new legal representation after his current legal counsel withdrew from the case.

According to the state daily, the withdrawal of Mr. Tiégnan’s lawyers stemmed from an exception of unconstitutionality raised during the hearing. Despite Tiégnan’s request for an additional two to three weeks to secure new legal representation, the court has firmly scheduled the continuation of the case for December 9, 2024, at 9 a.m.
