President Geingob Marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Namibia – President Hage Geingob on Saturday joined Namibia and the global community in observing the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This day is dedicated to raising awareness and taking action against the violence faced by women and girls worldwide.

According to Namibian Press Agency (NAMPA), President Geingob acknowledged the progress Namibia has made in tackling violence against women and girls. This progress includes the implementation of key legislations such as the Combating of Domestic Violence Act and the Affirmative Action Act. These laws are focused on protecting victims, promoting gender equality, and ensuring women’s participation in decision-making processes.

President Geingob highlighted the government’s efforts in raising awareness through various campaigns, workshops, and educational programs. Additionally, he mentioned the development of a national action plan on gender-based violence, which aims to enhance support services and improve data collection related to such crimes.

The Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare, along with other stakeholders, are at the forefront of initiatives to prevent violence against women and girls in Namibia. President Geingob pointed out the establishment of specialized units within the Namibian Police Force to address gender-based violence cases.

Concluding his statement, President Geingob emphasized the need for unity in the fight against gender-based violence. He called for efforts to create a world where women can live without fear, discrimination, and violence, underscoring the importance of this global issue and Namibia’s commitment to addressing it.
