Two officials of Tunisian mining products transport company kept in custody over corruption charges

A former director general and an assistant engineer at the Tunisian company for the transport of mining products (STTPM) were kept in custody for corruption and use of position as civil servants to obtain an unjustified advantage and harm the administration, the Interior Ministry said Friday.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Tunis 1 Court of First Instance has issued detention warrants against them, as well as a wanted notice against the manager of a company subcontracted by the STTPM.

Investigations on suspicions of administrative and financial corruption were carried out by the National Guard’s unit to combat economic and financial crimes against two officials of that company under the Gafsa Phosphate Company (CPG).

Initial investigations revealed evidence of corruption in a public contract for the transport of mining products concluded in 2017 with a private transport company.

This involved the payment of an amount of 1 million dinars as an advance without legal grounds, against work not carried out and making the public company bear charges not provided for in the contract, for the benefit of the contracting company.
