Over 1,200 Students in Three Counties Receive Leadership Mentorship Through Equity Bank’s Scholarships

MACHAKOS, Kenya — More than 1,200 students from Machakos, Makueni, and Kajiado counties participated in a three-day leadership mentorship program this week, aimed at empowering young scholars who are beneficiaries of the Wings to Fly and Elimu Scholarship programs. The event, held at Mumbuni High School, is part of a broader initiative titled ‘The Triad to Success’, which plans to reach 23,101 students nationwide, including 2,574 refugees from the Dadaab and Kakuma camps.

According to Kenya News Agency, Vice Chancellor of Machakos University, the mentorship program is supported by Equity Bank, which provides educational opportunities to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. “We applaud Equity Bank and especially the CEO, Dr. James Mwangi, for being a visionary and magnanimous man who has enabled less privileged students to get education,” Professor Agalo stated during her address. She also warned the students about the dangers of drug and substance abuse and the impact it could have on their educational aspirations.

Stephen Kalani, Director of Operations at Equity Bank Limited, noted that the mentorship sessions are designed to equip students with practical skills and knowledge to succeed in a dynamic world. He revealed that similar sessions are running concurrently in 19 centers across all 47 counties of Kenya.

The local government also expressed support for the program, with a Machakos County Executive Committee Member praising its impact on the community. Additionally, the county has initiated its own support scheme for 40 students, encouraging more sponsorship for educationally marginalized youth.
